The gift of better eyesight

THE chance of getting their eyesight restored was perhaps the highlight at a recent free medical camp in Kampar. The event organised by the Perak Sikh Human Development Organisation (PPIS) with the cooperation of the state government was graced by Raja Yong Sofia Sultan Azlan Shah. PPIS chairman and Ipoh Hospital ophthalmologist Datuk Dr Jasvinder Singh said a total of 350 patients were examined during the event and were given free medical, eye and dental examination while some of them with poor health were referred to the hospital for further examinations.

Five free intraocular lenses were provided by PPIS for underprivileged patients suffering from cataracts during the event which was held at Surau Al-Amaliah, in Taman Sentosa, Kampar. Dr Jasvinder, an eye specialist and surgeon, said PPIS has organised more than 185 such medical camps in Perak, and irrespective of race, and religion, many people have benefited from such programmes. The organisation provided free eye screenings while the state Dental Health Office providing free dental check-ups from a mobile bus.

Kampar Health Clinic also had its counter for blood donation and organ donor registration during the event. Meanwhile, Special officer to Perak Chief Minister Keshvinder Singh described the event as a meaningful and humble approach for helping the needy people in Perak.

"We have identified several individuals who cannot afford medical treatment and we are assisting them while at the same time, we are also trying to inject a sense of awareness for the younger generation on the importance of healthcare,” he said. More than 50 food parcels, courtesy of Yayasan Bina Upaya, a state body set up to tackle poverty in Perak, were also distributed to the elderly on that day.

Also present at the event was Perak Crime Prevention and Community Safety Department chief Senior Asst Comm T. Selven Among other organistaions that took part at the event were the Royal Malaysian Police (Kampar), Social Welfare Department and Kampar Health Department.
